Mandurah retaining wall prices at a glance
There is no official price list for retaining walls in Western Australia. The figures below are our own 2026 planning ranges in Australian dollars, based on the kinds of residential jobs we see quoted across Mandurah and the Peel. They are a starting point for a budget, not a quote. The real number only comes after a contractor has measured the wall and looked at the ground.
Prices are per square metre of exposed wall face, supplied and installed, including a standard footing, drainage and backfill on a reasonably accessible residential site, GST inclusive.
| Wall type | Typical use | 2026 guide (AUD per m² of wall face) |
|---|---|---|
| Treated pine or hardwood timber sleeper | Low garden terraces and edging | $250 to $450 |
| Limestone block, natural or reconstituted | Front-yard terraces, garden beds, low boundary walls | $300 to $550 |
| Concrete sleeper with galvanised steel posts | Boundary runs, pools, side setbacks | $400 to $750 |
| Segmental interlocking concrete block | Curved walls, moderate heights | $450 to $800 |
| Core-filled reinforced block, engineered | Tall walls, driveways, walls carrying loads | $700 to $1,400 |
For a small job, a minimum charge often applies, because the crew, machine and materials still have to be brought to the block. Very short walls can therefore cost more per square metre than the table suggests.
What pushes the price up
Height. Taller walls need bigger footings, more steel, heavier sleepers or block, and sometimes an engineer. Cost per square metre generally rises with height, not just the total.
Access. A wide side gate or open verge lets a machine drive straight in. A narrow passage, steps or a steep driveway may mean smaller machines, more hand work and more time.
Ground conditions. Loose sand is easy to dig but needs care to stop trenches slumping. Limestone rock close to the surface, common in parts of Halls Head and Falcon, may need breaking out. A high water table near canals and the estuary can complicate footings.
Load above the wall. A driveway, a shed slab, a pool or a building near the top of the wall means a stronger design.
Removing an old wall. Demolishing and carting away an existing wall adds labour and disposal costs.
Spoil. Excavated sand that has to leave the site is charged by the truckload, and on a big cut that can be a sizeable line.
Finish. Rendering, painting, stone cladding, decorative sleepers and capping all add to the base price.
Fences on top. A dividing fence or pool fence on the wall may need longer posts or extra fixings.
What can bring it down
- Several walls in one job, so set-up costs are shared.
- Simple straight runs rather than curves and steps.
- Reusing spoil on site as backfill or to raise garden areas.
- Reusing sound limestone blocks when rebuilding an old wall.
- Choosing the right wall for the height, rather than over-building a low garden wall.
Extras to check on every quote
These are the items most often left off a cheaper quote:
- Drainage pipe and gravel behind the wall.
- Geotextile fabric to keep sand from washing through.
- Engineering design, where the height or load needs it.
- Building permit application and fees.
- Service locating before digging.
- Spoil removal, with an estimate of how many loads.
- Making good lawn, reticulation, paving and garden beds afterwards.
- Rock if it is found, and how it will be charged.
If an item is not on the quote, ask whether it is included or extra.
Repairs and earthworks
Repairs are priced case by case because the cause and extent of the damage vary so much. A short section of limestone re-laid with fabric is a very different job from rebuilding a long sleeper wall with new posts. See repairs and rebuilds.
Earthworks for levelling and footings is usually part of the wall price. Where a lot of cut and fill is needed, it may be quoted separately, often as machine hours plus truckloads of spoil. Small excavator or skid steer hire with an operator commonly sits around $120 to $180 per hour in 2026, before cartage. See site prep and earthworks.
Comparing two quotes fairly
- Check both quotes are for the same length and height.
- Check both use the same wall type and finish.
- Line up footing, drainage, fabric and backfill.
- Compare who handles permits and engineering.
- Compare spoil handling and clean-up.
- Ask each contractor what they would do if they hit rock or water.
The lowest total is not always the cheapest job once the missing items are added back in.
